Oesia Group develops an innovative satellite communications system for maritime rescue

INSTER |  Tactical and secure communications

  • The onboard system facilitates the management of offshore emergency operations, with the transmission of high quality video in real time via Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications.
  • The work was carried out within the framework of the iSAR Project, a collaboration between the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and Maritime Rescue, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Madrid, August 8, 2024 – Grupo Oesía, leader in dual-use digital and industrial engineering, has successfully completed the development and demonstration of an innovative high bandwidth satellite communications system on board, within the iSAR Integral Innovation Program for Maritime Rescue.
The project consisted of the supply, installation, operation and verification of communications systems on Maritime Rescue vessels.
The solution developed and manufactured by Inster, the division of Grupo Oesía hyper-specialized in satellite communications, provides Internet connectivity with high bandwidth and low latencies to the vessels, by means of low orbit satellite communications terminals (LEO).
In addition, the solution incorporated on-board equipment for secure, real-time, high-quality video transmission to coordination centers and crisis cabinets responsible for managing emergencies on land.
This development also facilitates the general uses of broadband Internet access on board, such as the connection of cell phones, tablets and laptops.
The Satcom terminal included in the project is a Ku-band fullduplex communications equipment, consisting of low-profile, electronically beamformed radiating apertures.
The terminal also has a radio frequency front-end, an Inertial Navigation System (INS), which also has dual GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), an Antenna Control Unit (ACU) and the power supply system.
Manufactured 100% in the facilities of Grupo Oesía with Spanish technology, this terminal stands out for its compact design and low power consumption.
Among the characteristics of the new device stands out its capacity to transmit in broadband 150 Mbps download and 30 Mbps upload.
Tests carried out with the device have demonstrated very high communications availability, both in reception and transmission.
For Marina Santos, Engineering Manager of Inster-Oesia Group, “the project has allowed to demonstrate the real possibilities of high bandwidth satellite communications in real time based on LEO constellations in an extraordinarily complex environment, such as Maritime Rescue operations for the rescue of people in dangerous situations at sea. We would like to express our great satisfaction for the work carried out together with Salvamento Marítimo for having been able to respond to the challenge posed with a Spanish technological and industrial solution”.
The Product Development and Engineering teams of Inster-Grupo Oesía, with headquarters in Getafe and R&D offices in Nigrán, have more than a decade of leadership in the development of satellite communication terminals for fixed and mobility applications.
Their terminals allow communication with traditional GEO and GEO HTS satellites in extreme movement conditions, being successfully implemented in emergency vehicles, military and high speed trains.
Recently Inster has configured a portfolio of state-of-the-art Satcom terminals for the new generations of medium and low orbit satellite constellations, with ambitions for multi-orbit operation and use in terrestrial environments,

SGoSat

Family of SATCOM On The Move (SOTM) terminals for vehicular installation and stable mobile connection

SGoSat is a family of high-tech SOTM (Satellite Comms On The Move) terminals that are installed in a vehicle, providing the ability to target and maintain a stable connection to the satellite when the vehicle is in motion in any type of conditions.

The SGoSat family is composed of versatile terminals, which can be installed on any type of platform: trains and buses, military and/or government vehicles, aircraft, ships, etc. Originally designed for the military sector, SGoSat terminals are extremely reliable and robust, integrating high-performance components that comply with the most stringent environmental and EMI/EMC regulations. The product uses low-profile, high-efficiency antennas and a high-performance positioning and tracking unit, allowing the terminal to be operated anywhere in the world.

In order to meet the diverse needs of its customers, INSTER has developed single band and dual band terminals in X, Ka and Ku frequencies.

The SGoSat family of terminals can also be configured with a wide range of radomes (including ballistic options) to suit customer requirements.
